Why Clean Eating Became So Important to Me
“Just because you can function doesn't mean you're thriving.
I believe healthy eating shouldn't be confusing or restrictive. My goal is to help busy families simplify nutrition, choose more real foods, and discover what helps their own bodies thrive—without guilt, perfection, or the latest diet trends. “

I've shared a lot about clean eating, healthy recipes, and what I feed my family, but I haven't really shared why this lifestyle has become so important to me.
So today, I want to tell you my story.
For years, I looked perfectly healthy on the outside. I was active, athletic, successful in my career, and generally took good care of myself. Most people—including my doctor—would have considered me healthy.
The truth is, I became incredibly good at pushing through.
I showed up to work. I advanced in my career. I exercised. I socialized. I checked all the boxes.
From the outside, I looked like I had it all together. But underneath the surface, something wasn't right.
I was constantly bloated. Every single day. In fact, the only time I ever felt "normal" was first thing in the morning before I'd eaten anything.
I struggled with brain fog so severe that I sometimes wondered if I had developed an attention disorder. I couldn't think clearly during meetings, I had trouble concentrating, and I often felt like I was operating at half capacity. Pushing through this took A LOT of energy out of me.
I suffered from migraines that completely knocked me out.
And my energy? Practically nonexistent—especially after 3 p.m. Every afternoon felt like I was dragging myself through quicksand.
I learned to live with it because everyone around me seemed to think those things were normal. So I kept pouring myself another cup of coffee to get through the day.
Looking back now, I realize I wasn't actually thriving.
I was surviving.
And while I managed to keep performing, it wasn't sustainable.
After my first pregnancy, those symptoms became even worse. That's when I knew I couldn't keep accepting that this was simply "normal."
I needed answers.
Eventually, I found a functional medicine practitioner whose approach was completely different from anything I had experienced before.
Instead of looking only for disease, she wanted to understand why I wasn't feeling well. She asked questions no other doctor had asked before and ordered more comprehensive testing than I had ever received.
The results were overwhelming.
I was severely deficient in several vitamins and minerals. My hormones were out of balance. And while I wasn't diagnosed with celiac disease right away, there were clear signs that gluten wasn't working well for my body. My thyroid health was also beginning to show signs that something wasn't right.
For the first time, my symptoms actually made sense.
Looking back now, I don't think the tests "fixed" me. They simply gave me the missing pieces of the puzzle. The real healing came from making changes—starting with the food I put on my plate every single day to help support my gut health that then helps support everything else.
Food Changed Everything
Once I removed the foods that were causing problems for my body, in my case, gluten, and focused on rebuilding my nutrient stores, everything slowly began to change.
It wasn't an overnight miracle.
It happened gradually.
My bloating improved.
My energy returned.
The brain fog lifted.
The migraines became far less frequent.
For the first time in years, I actually felt like myself again.
That experience completely changed my relationship with food.
I became fascinated by ingredients. I learned where gluten hides, how heavily processed foods can crowd out nourishing foods, and why whole foods are so powerful.
Ironically, I also stopped obsessing over food.
That might sound contradictory, but here's what I mean.
Instead of counting calories, chasing diets, or feeling guilty after eating, I shifted my focus to one simple question:
"Is this nourishing my body?"
That question changed everything.
I started filling my plate with whole fruits, vegetables, quality proteins, healthy fats, and foods my body recognized and could actually use.
As long as I was eating real, nourishing food (and avoiding gluten, which my body doesn't tolerate), I stopped stressing over every bite.
Clean eating stopped feeling like restriction.
It became an act of self-care.
Not about being perfect.
Not about eating "clean" 100% of the time.
Not about guilt or rules.
It became about giving my body what it needed to thrive.
I also want to be clear about something. This isn't a post telling everyone to stop eating gluten.
Gluten was a significant piece of my health story, and removing it made a remarkable difference for me. But every body is different, and what worked for me may not be what someone else needs.
That said, I do believe it's worth taking an honest look at the foods that make up our everyday diets.
Many of the foods we eat most often—breads, pastries, crackers, cereals, and convenience foods—are made with refined grains and highly processed ingredients. While there's certainly room to enjoy those foods, they're not as nutrient-dense as whole foods like vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds, and quality proteins. Grains are definitely a great source of minerals, vitamins and fibre, but we need to be mindful of how they are cultivated, grown and harvested.
My goal isn't to convince you that gluten is the enemy. It's to encourage you to build your meals around foods that truly nourish your body and to become curious about how different foods make you feel.
For me, gluten happened to be one piece of the puzzle.
For you, your journey may look different.
Why I Started nrshYOU
My journey is exactly why I created nrshYOU.
Because if someone like me—someone who genuinely cared about health—could spend years feeling awful without understanding why, I know I'm not alone.
So many of us have accepted feeling tired, bloated, foggy, inflamed, or constantly craving sugar as normal simply because everyone else seems to feel that way too.
I don't believe that's the way we're meant to live.
The food industry has made nutrition incredibly confusing. Every week there's another trend, another miracle product, another diet promising to fix everything.
But my experience taught me that health doesn't have to be complicated.
At its core, it's about nourishing ourselves with real food and learning to listen to our bodies.
That's the heart behind nrshYOU.
I'm not here to tell you what diet to follow.
I'm here to help simplify healthy eating so you can feel your best—because when you nourish yourself well, everything else in life becomes a little easier.
More energy.
More clarity.
More presence with the people you love.
That's what clean eating means to me.
Nourish Yourself,
Orianne
